Compose a Flight Plan to send a Probe into space

Solar System Voyager (SSVG) is simulation software for sending spacecraft (Probes) to locations (Targets) throughout the solar system and beyond. Specialized knowledge of space flight simulation is not required to successfully use this software and send a Probe into space!

A Fight Plan is developed with the trajectory of the Probe displaying on a three-dimensional chart along with the orbit of the target planet. The chart can be rotated to view the relationships between Probe and Target and between their orbits from different angles. Times can be changed to view the positions at both future and past points in time.

Three propulsion systems

A Probe has Chemical Propulsion and Electric Propulsion Engines as well as a Solar Sail providing three means of power:

  • Chemical Propulsion will instantaneously accelerate the Probe
  • Electric Propulsion continuously accelerates
  • The Solar Sail works with the use of large mirrors to reflect sunlight continuously accelerates the Probe

Viewing a sample Flight Plan

Download and unzip the SSVG zip file and launch SSVG.exe to display the SSVG window, complete with a control panel, file information and review buttons, and the 3D Orbit window. Open the File menu to select a sample plan to view. The Flight Plan in the file you select displays as a table in the SSVG window. It comprises three columns for the Type, Parameters and Status and each line of the table contains a new instruction (Maneuver). To execute the next Maneuver (marked as 'Next' in the Status column), click the EXEC Next button in the control panel. A new window, Show Orbit, opens and the Probe leaves the space base and begins its journey which displays on the 3D Orbit window.

On the 3D chart, the Probe is a red X, the Probe's orbit is red, the Target is a green + and its orbit is green, the sun is a black circle, and the planets are shown as + and their names in cyan. The chart can be manipulated with cursor movement in the 3D Orbit window and other manipulations, including Time Prediction, are executed in the Show Orbit window.

Generating a Flight Plan

Spaceflight simulation in SSVG is based on sending the voyage from a space base in space and not from Earth. The program provides the choice of one of two space bases. The instructions that make up the Flight Plan are called Maneuvers of which there are seven types - start (START), fly (FLYTO), and activate or deactivate the propulsion systems (CP, EP_ON, EP_OFF, SS_ON & SS_OFF).

To develop a Flight Plan, click New in the File menu to open the New Flight Plan window. Here you select the Space Base you want to start your flight from and click the 'EDIT Next' button in the SSVG window to bring up the Maneuver Editor window to input a START Maneuver. For Start Time and Start Velocity settings here, you'll need help from the Optimize Assistant (Optimize button) to determine the feasibility of your settings which depend upon where you are heading your probe.

SSVG is a very intriguing and engrossing free space flight simulation program that provides lots of documentation to help with the learning curve. The 3D chart is a great way to find out what happens when a planned orbit is changed or if the probe is accelerated or decelerated suddenly. You can view replicated flight plans of past space missions and learn about such requirements as 'orbital transfer,' 'gravity assist' and 'swing by' for flight plan success. You can experiment to see what happens when certain Maneuvers are changed and, once you've gained some expertise, there are no limits to the flight plans you can make.
